Dear Julie F The side of a brick is called the stretcher

Dear Julie F
The side of a brick is called the stretcher, the end being the header. Stretcher bond has just the sides of bricks showing and is the normal nowadays, and since about the 1920s when cavity walls were introduced. Flemish bond has alternating stretchers and headers in every row, and represents a solid wall, nine inches thick without a cavity. English bond is another pattern of solid wall, having alternating rows of hearers and stretchers.
